Valuing Diversity Ph.D. Scholarships

The American Marketing Association Foundation (AMAF), in conjunction with the AMA Academic Council, established a new scholarship program in 2003 focused on creating scholarship funds for populations underrepresented in the marketing profession.

The number of African Americans, Hispanics and Native Americans pursuing doctoral degrees in marketing is too low to reach a future goal of increased diversity in the marketing profession in both academic and corporate settings. For example, during a recent 16-year timeframe (1983-1998), of the 1,533 total earned doctoral degrees in marketing, only 86, or 5.6%, of those earned were by underrepresented populations (48 by African Americans, 25 by Hispanics, and 13 by Native Americans.)  For many of the years during this period, there was just one member of each of these underrepresented populations earning a doctoral degree in marketing, and for several years there were none.  In 2004, 9 of the 134 doctoral degrees awarded in Marketing were earned by underrepresented populations.  Although this is a slight improvement, much work still needs to be done to achieve the goal of increased diversity in the marketing profession.

Through its Valuing Diversity Ph.D. Scholarship Program, the AMAF seeks to widen the opportunities for underrepresented populations to attend marketing doctoral programs.  In 2003, the Foundation awarded its first two scholarships under the Valuing Diversity Ph.D. Scholarship Program.  For the 2007-2008 academic year, five $1,000 scholarships will be granted to students currently enrolled in Ph.D. programs.  The scholarships for 2007 are funded by the donors of the AMAF’s Valuing Diversity Fund.

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • They must be from one of the following populations: African American, Hispanic American, or Native American.
  • They must be a U.S. citizen or a permanent U.S. resident.
  • They must be enrolled, on campus, in a full-time AACSB accredited marketing doctoral program, and have successfully completed at least one year.
  • They have not previously received a Valuing Diversity Scholarship.

Applicants must complete the online application found on the AMAF's Web site by June 15, 2007.  Essays must be in Microsoft Word format; essays should be two-pages, double-spaced, in 12 pt. type (approximately 500 words.)  Sources you mention in your essay should be supplied on an additional page and do not count against the two-page maximum.

The two letters of recommendation must be received in the AMAF office (located at 311 South Wacker Drive, Suite 5800, Chicago, IL 60606) by June 15, 2007.

Applicants will be evaluated based on the following:

1) Two letters of recommendation:

a. One from the applicant’s advisor or Doctoral Program Coordinator, and
b. One from another faculty member, preferably from whom the applicant has taken a course.

Optimally, these letters should speak to the candidate's academic work or initiatives that demonstrate a commitment to advancing diversity.

2) An essay explaining how receiving a Valuing Diversity Scholarship will help you further your research efforts.  Your essay also should address one of the following:

a. How your dissertation research incorporates conceptual, design, or methods issues related to diversity.
b. How your dissertation research contributes to advancing the field of marketing.
c. How your dissertation research incorporates any innovative theories or advanced, cutting-edge designs, methods, or approaches.

The chair of the Scholarship Committee of the AMAF and the President of the AMA Academic Division will select an evaluation committee of past scholarship recipients, a marketing faculty member, and a member of the AMA Academic Council.

Announcement of Winners
The scholarships will be presented at the The PhD Project Dinner at the Marketing Doctoral Students Association Annual Conference and recognized at the AMA Summer Educators' Conference.
